On September 1, 2026, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons released its 47-page 2025 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report. It describes the year’s cosmetic and reconstructive procedures in the United States and, for the first time, examines trends associated with GLP-1 weight loss medicines.

01 · THE YEAR IN NUMBERS — Growth Varied by Category

In 2025, the estimated number of US cosmetic surgical procedures was 1,523,330 cases, up 7% from 1,425,390 in 2024. The estimated number of reconstructive procedures was 1,282,735 cases, up 6% year on year. Both totals point to expanding demand, but changes vary by procedure, age group and region.

Growth in cosmetic surgery was driven largely by breast augmentation and lifts, eyelid surgery, and some lifting and body contouring procedures. Liposuction remained the most common at 317,196 procedures, down 1%. Breast augmentation rose 11% to 304,234, while eyelid surgery increased 19%, the fastest growth among the top five.

Facial fat grafting had the fastest growth rate, up 39% to 34,117 procedures. By volume, liposuction remained the largest category at 317,196 despite a 1% decline.

02 · RESTORATION AND LIFT — The Central Demand in 2025

Facial fat grafting rose 39% year on year; forehead or brow lifts rose 29%; upper body lifts 22%; arm and neck lifts 21% each; and thigh lifts 20%. Eyelid surgery rose 19%, facelifts 13% and breast lifts 8%.

Rhinoplasty and buttock fat grafting each fell 5%, while male breast reduction fell 8%. Established procedures did not all grow together. Gains were concentrated in age-related restoration, contouring after weight change and adjustments to breast proportions.

03 · THE GLP-1 EFFECT — A Visible Clinical Context

The ASPS report included a dedicated survey on GLP-1 use for the first time in 2025. 82% of surveyed ASPS member surgeons said they had received plastic surgery enquiries related to GLP-1 weight loss medicines. The report identifies rapid changes in facial and body volume after weight loss as an important clinical context.

04 · BREAST PROCEDURES — Growth and a Shift Towards Moderate Sizes

Breast procedures contributed substantially to cosmetic surgery growth in 2025. Breast augmentation rose 11%, breast lifts 8% and breast reduction 7%. Breast implant removals totalled 45,773, little changed from 2024.

On implant size, 52% of surveyed surgeons observed no clear change in patient preference; 36% observed a shift towards smaller implants and 12% towards larger ones. The 36% is a share of surgeons reporting a trend, not a share of patients choosing smaller implants.

05 · MINIMALLY INVASIVE — Toxin First, HA Fillers Second

In the 2025 report, botulinum toxin injections ranked first among minimally invasive treatments, followed by soft tissue or hyaluronic acid fillers and laser skin treatments. Hair removal, intense pulsed light and tattoo removal ranked fourth; non-hyaluronic acid fillers ranked fifth.

ASPS did not publish national procedure counts for minimally invasive treatments this year. It said the market changes rapidly and it is still seeking data sources comparable to those used for surgical and reconstructive procedures. The report estimates that botulinum toxin accounts for about half of minimally invasive treatments and hyaluronic acid fillers for about 30%.

06 · WHY PATIENTS SEEK SURGERY — Restoring the Body After Life Changes

The report asked member surgeons to select up to three main reasons patients sought surgery in 2025, based on their clinical observations. Seventy-five per cent chose ‘restoring the body after major life changes’, ahead of appearance, confidence or longstanding concerns.

07 · AGE AND GENDER — Growth Shifts Towards Older Groups

Age was one of the clearest patterns in 2025. Procedure counts fell 9% among 18 to 25 year olds and 5% among 26 to 35 year olds. They rose 8% at ages 46 to 55, 15% at 56 to 65 and 24% at 66 and above. The 36 to 55 age range remained the largest by volume, with about 738,000 procedures across its two groups, or nearly half the national total.

The 66 and older group recorded 203,105 procedures, the fastest growth of any age group. The report connects this with longer healthy lives, continued work and social participation, and greater attention to long term quality of life.
